4. Training Guide (Must Read)

Train Attention

The training of attention includes attention stability, distribution and shift. When completing a square quickly, it necessarily requires maintaining a steady and focused attention. It is also necessary to distribute the attention into at least two parts: one is to look for the next number and the other is to control the finger clicking on the number, which is the distribution of attention. Schulte Table is a sequential search for numbers; when you see 1, you are ready to look for 2, when you find 2, you are ready to look for 3, and so on, and this process is exactly how attention is constantly shifted.

Each mode of Schulte Table includes concentration training. Please train in a relaxed and non-fatigued state for best results. Do not train for more than 30 minutes per day, and if possible, it is recommended to train twice a day for 15 minutes each time.

Training multiple orders of tables at the same time is more effective in improving attention. Alternate the numbers 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6 during a training session, and as your level increases, train more of the higher order forms. Don't just train 4x4 just because it's easy and fast to complete. 4x4 is better for beginners like children, while 5x5 is better for middle school students and adults with average attention levels, and 6x6 is better for people with higher attention levels. So just having a good 4x4 score but a bad 6x6 score does not indicate a good attention level.

Switching order (ascending/descending), shape (upright/tilting/rotating) and color (colored/white/gray/black/light/dark) for training is recommended frequently to eliminate the burnout that can occur with prolonged practice, as well as to increase the transferability of attention improved through Schulte Table. Attention is a universal underlying brain ability and we want to avoid falling into the trap of just training proficiency instead of training attention. Schulte Table offers a rich set-up to address this issue.

Train Working Memory

Working memory is a major discovery in modern cognitive psychology. Scientists have discovered that all cognitive thinking activities rely on a kind of short-term memory in the brain, which is mainly reflected in two aspects: one is to selectively call out the relevant contents of the brain's long-term memory and keep them active, and the other is to temporarily store the results of intermediate thinking processes for the next thinking activities. This short term memory is called working memory. Working memory is short term and can be erased when the thinking process is completed. It is equivalent to the registers of the CPU of a computer, and those who understand the principles of computers can draw an analogy to know its importance. Working memory is much more important in thinking and cognitive activities than what is commonly referred to as memory, which is long term memory. It is working memory that Schulte Table training improves.

When training with each mode of Schulte Table except the memory mode, you can focus on either working memory or peripheral vision. Focusing on working memory is done by paying special attention to the number you are looking for and the multiple numbers you will be looking for afterwards while searching for the next number, and instantly remembering their locations so that you find multiple numbers in one search, speeding up the completion of the table. The number of digits you can remember at one time, and the time it takes to remember them, determines your performance. Beginners can remember two numbers at a time, and gradually improve to remembering more numbers at a time.

Schulte Table has a special memory mode, which is designed for people who need to strengthen their short term memory (including working memory) through training. Once the table is displayed, remember the position of all the numbers in as short a time as possible, then hide the numbers and start to find all the numbers in turn to complete the table. For beginners, even completing a 4x4 table can be difficult. But don't be discouraged, when you can't recall the position of the numbers you are looking for, you can choose hints. After some practice, you will find that you need fewer and fewer hints until you can complete the entire 4x4 table without hints. After that you can continue training and try to remember the 4x4 table in a shorter time. For those who want to excel in memory, you can continue practicing with 5x5 and 6x6 forms afterwards.

Train Vision

When training with Schulte Table, you can focus on training peripheral visual ability (i.e., visual breadth). Here's how to do it: Keep your eyes on the middle of the table and don't move, and use your eye's afterglow to identify the numbers in the peripheral positions. When you have this visual breadth, you don't need to fix your eyes on the number you are looking for in order to find it, but as long as the number is within the range of your peripheral vision, you can recognize it immediately. The ability of peripheral vision is a key to the performance of the Schulte Table. If you are a beginner, you can start with the 4x4 form. Although everyone's peripheral vision ability and limits will be different, most people have no problem covering the 4x4 form with visual breadth after training. With the visual breadth of a 4x4 form, the speed of doing 5x5,6x6 forms will also increase dramatically.

Visual breadth directly affects one's ability to read quickly and is the foundation of fast reading ability. Reading word by word is impossible to achieve fast reading, only a sweep of ten lines at a glance can achieve fast reading. Adhere to the correct practice with Schulte Table, the goal of ten lines at a glance is not difficult to achieve.

Schulte Table has a wealth of shape settings (upright/tilt/rotate) and color settings (color/white/gray/black/light/dark), and regular training can create a stimulus for the visual nerve endings, helping you to improve your visual ability and reaction in dynamic and complex environments.

The ability to respond to visual stress is an important ability for a person. Whether it is the resourceful alertness to avoid danger in life or the needs of a profession, such as driving, all require a good enough visual stress response. The rich and varied set-up of Schulte Table helps you get more effective training of visual stress reaction ability.

Improve Language Abilities

In addition to number tables, Schulte Table also has letter tables and idiom tables. Many people are slower to do letter forms than number forms because they are far less sensitive to letters than numbers. This can be changed if you train with alphabetical forms regularly, and you can do alphabetical forms exactly as fast as you do numerical forms. Increased sensitivity to the alphabet will have a direct positive feedback on your English learning and reading ability, and this effect is subtle.

The idiom table of Schulte Table eliminates out-of-the-way idioms and contains all commonly used Chinese idioms, totaling more than 6,000. It is divided into three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced, and you can choose a level when training. For example, elementary school students practicing idiom forms can choose beginner. You can customize the classification level of the idioms in the settings: for example, move some idioms from beginner to intermediate so that you can train with beginner idioms without including those moved out.

Notes about the five modes

All types of Schulte Table tables (number tables, letter tables and idiom tables) contain five training modes: classic mode, transformation mode, elimination mode, marking mode, and memory mode. The classic mode is the traditional Schulte Table mode; the transformation mode disrupts the order after each click, this mode is specifically for training attention and visual ability, not training memory; the elimination mode and the marking mode will eliminate or mark the characters that have been identified, which reduces the difficulty and helps reduce fatigue and increase interest; the memory mode is specifically set for intensive training of memory ability. Trainers can switch to use it reasonably according to the above instructions.
